Hyracotherium leporinum
There are very few mammal fossils from the London clay of Sheppey in existence. Most are of the little Eocene horse Hyracotherium leporinum. As far as I can discover only six distinct species have been identified, two of which are illustrated on these pages
Hyracotherium leporinum Lower jaw section found By members of the Medway Society on the Coastguard lookout section of the beach. Hyracotherium leporinum is also known as the Dawn Horse having four hoofed 'toes' on each foot.
